123,000 Displaced by floods - a few receive food

Uganda has experienced unusually heavy rains raising the water level of Lake Victoria to record levels. Over 123,000 who live on the banks and islands were displaced. 

The Africa Bible Project responded with 11,000 pounds of food supplied by women members of our Hosanna Micro Finance Project.

Over 30,000,000 Ugandans living today haven't turned on a light switch...a few of them received food donated by folks in the United States. You can meet a few of them by scrolling down to see their story. 

Those who received food were chosen by leaders of five county-wide pastor associations who have partnered with The Africa Bible Project around Lake Victoria (Majanhi, Masafu, Bukana, Buyinja, Busia (2) and a few other partners in ministry).

Mzee Samson Kwoba, 81 years old, was blind at the age of 60 years. He is living with 8 grandchildren left behind by his daughters. “ Even though I am blind God still seeks me out and shows His love to me despite my blind state, I can never fail to love Jesus unto my grave…”

The chairman of this village, who is a Muslim, said, "If all Churches had such love to care for those who are not in their religion, then the world would have received the gospel….”

Anjela Awino is 44 years. She is in her new home after her home was destroyed in Nawandiri in Majanji lake side She happily received her food basket from the Africa Bible Project saying that this act of love has made her happy again.

Nafuna Suzan, aged 52 years, is a widow in Buyinja. She says now she knows Christ will always take care of her.

Mama Athieno Maria, aged 34 years, is a mother of 7 children. Her husband ran away and left them behind. Her house was washed away by the rising waters of lake Victoria. She is staying in a kitchen given to her by a good Samaritan.

Agutu Nabwire, aged 44 years, is HIV positive, a widow, and a mother of 9 children on Bukana Islands. “If it wasn’t for Jesus, the husband to widows, who would have found us and gave us food…”

Kafuko Nabirye, aged 39 years. Her husband is in prison has been in prison for the last 12 years for man slaughter.

Brian Bwire, age 12, has to use a wheelchair. He is joyful with his siblings after receiving the food basket from the ABP team in front of the hut where they sleep.

Nakato Sarah, aged 16, is head of this family of five. She recently gave birth to baby girl. She didn't know where to get food.

Nakauma Agnes is 15. She is not well physically. She heads a family of four. She was very happy to receive the food basket.

Irene Wanyonyi is 27. Her husband ran away from her. She now stays stays in a dilapidated house.

Mama Noerina Nafula is 72. Her house washed down. Yet, she is joyous to receive her food.

Pastor Steven Wandera is Chairman of Majanji Lake Side. He is receiving for a Pastors association. The food will be giving for families staying on the floating islands on Lake Victoria.

Fauzia Mariam, who is 69, is standing by the receding waters of Lake Victoria receiving her food basket from ABP team in Nawandiri in Majanji Lake side. Her house was destroyed by the rising waters of Lake Victoria. Fauzia is a grandmother to 16 grandchildren.

Akinyi Anna Mary, aged 38 years, is ululating after getting a food basket from ABP team in Majanji lake side.

Malisera Ajambo, who is 29, is a mother of two. Her house was swallowed by the waters of Lake Victoria. Now she stays at a friend’s home and she was given the kitchen to say in with her two children.

Rosemary Akinyi, is 32. She had her first child when she was 14. She is carrying her granddaughter, Samalie, aged two years. She has a family of 13 and she is a single parent living among fishermen in Bukana Island.

Mangeni John, who is 17, is happy, “that now we have food to take care of our family. This food will help us for a time, glory to Christ."

Pastor Wandera Robbert, is 54 and HIV positive. He said that the ARVs had started treating him badly as he didn’t have food to eat and he had taken his last two doses on an empty stomach.

Mr. Twaha Swaibu, Chairman of the Local Council One for Madibira B, is receiving food baskets for 5 people who are in the isolation center in his village who are suspect to be positive for COVID-19. He is thankful and sends his gratitude. "The Church is being felt by the community and the church had come down to the needs of the community." He thanked the Africa Bible Project for the support.
