Pastor Training Handout

11/30/2022

Each Bible we distribute must be a shepherded Bible.  In other words, the Bible is from someone to someone. We are not handing out Bibles on a street corner to anyone walking by. We are looking for men and women who know those who are hungry for God's Word and can't afford it AND who are willing to teach the recipient how to use, value and share God's Word.

To assist the "disciple" who hands a Bible to someone hungry for God's Word, we have prepared a training guide to assist them. Below is a copy we hand to each person. The training stresses that God has always wanted His family, in His home or place and under His house rules and enjoying His blessings. You can read a full explanation of the theme in Vaughan Roberts' "The Big Picture" or Graeme Goldsworthy's Gospel and Kingdom. The handout below is free to download for personal use only.

"pour yourself out for the hungry and the afflicted…"

“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.” - Isaiah 58:10

Praise God that you want help others when times are tough! Give God glory because you want to satisfy “the desire of afflicted” in your neighborhood! AND even in Uganda!

Praise God that a family in Memphis is helping those starving in Uganda!

Ugandans face significant challenges due to the Delta variant of Covid. Churches, schools and many businesses are again closed.

Rural Ugandans’ crops are failing because of drought and have little to eat.

Praise God though because one donor gave much we are able to help many.

Co-founders’ Pastors Bernard Monday and David Okumu recently distributed 22 pound bags of maize to families in ten villages where the need was greatest and where we had distributed Bibles.

Pray for provision for those starving and in great need. Pray that pastors can navigate all the challenges facing the local church.

Go on mission in your neighborhood! You can go on mission today! Walk your block and pray for each home. Pray that God would direct you to someone in need of prayer, or help or a shoulder to lean on.
Go on mission in Uganda! Please consider helping us fill a container! Often local language Bibles are hard to find and afford. $73 will place about 10 Bibles into the hand of someone needing God’s Word today.
Recurring tax deductible monthly donations are welcome!
Please donate through our partner, the Disciple Makers Network. They support Christian ministries like the Africa Bible Ministries making sure that 100% of your donation designated (excluding credit card fees) is used for the project.

Voices from Bible Distribution and Training - Jan 31 to Feb 10

What do voices sound like that aren’t heard?

Picture
  • “We do not think our voice goes far from this place. We are very far from the main road. Our voice is very small but hearing the Gospel presented allows our people to hear God’s voice here. You coming here allows our people to be trained and know someone cares about us.”
  • “They feel like God is not helping them. They have left their homeland and everything they have. Now they have not enough food. Nobody knows when they will go home. People are still crying. The Gospel brings their only lasting hope.”
  • “When you don’t have a Bible you are like a person living without food.”
  • “I have learned how to summarized the Bible in a few hours. It captures many major points. I didn’t think it was possible to do.”
  • “Today the Kuman are getting a Bible in their own language. Most have never heard it in their language.”
  • “This island receives little bringing good. Witch doctors, alcohol, drugs, and harlots harm the island and I feel the darkness of this place. Two days ago a youth was murder and they celebrated the death. Your message of hope in Christ and a new heaven and a new earth gives me peace at least for an eternal future.”
  • "During Kony we lived at times hiding in the grass for our home and once lived under an ant mound. My brother and I ran one night for our lives from child soldiers. My brother did not return.”
  • "Everyone became angry with God...and then things got worse and they had only one Hope left...that only God would or could offer hope if not in this life then eternally."
  • “Because of the war, this area has not yet recovered either economically or mentally. It will take years to forget what we saw and lived.”
  • “Less than 10% of our church members have a Bible. They have little and the cost is beyond them.”
  • “Without the Gospel to move us to change our focus and turn to God, our people cannot move past these obstacles caused by poverty and lack of education.”
Picture
We are bringing the Good News and the people are rejoicing! Praise God for salvation, and pray that his word will go forth from these places.

    • 9 translations of the Bible were distributed in 9 locations: Acholi, Human, Lugandan Diglot, Lugandan, Japadhola, Lusoga, Samia, NKJ, Good News

"I am doing a new thing..."

God is making a way amidst suffering
"Behold, I am doing a new thing...I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." Isaiah 43:19

God speaks powerfully in Isaiah 43. Most of the folks we met on this trip would identify with this passage. They have "passed through the waters". Many though are looking for "a new way in the wilderness" and ask if God or anyone is with them.

Picture
Finishing distribution in the current region
This last Bible distribution is reason to praise God. He clearly went ahead of us to prepare the way where He is working. But we have only scratched the surface.
Still most lack a Bible in this region. BUT churches, which did received a few Bibles, are now seeing people sacrificing to buy a Bible…PRAISE GOD! We will distribute 10,000 or so more Bibles here and then be done for a total of about 40,000 Bibles.
The new region is challenging
Joseph Kony’s 20 year reign of terror affected most in this region as he brutally tried to purify the Acholi people through genocide. 66,000 were abducted as child soldiers. 2 million people were displaced between 1986 and 2009.
"Bring out the people who are blind, yet have eyes...!" Isaiah 43:8 The people here have lost many productive years of their lives. They are looking for answers and many trusting that somehow God will provide...despite their experiencing brutality that I cannot describe here. Their stories leave me weeping. Yet, they trust that God is here still.
Bible distribution here will be different as most pastors are untrained and uneducated. Yet they are committed to doing the work of the Gospel.
Here, we will distribute a mix of traditional Bibles in the Acholi language along with the Talking Bible in Acholi and English. Additionally, we are testing a study Bible for untrained pastors. This Bible will help many of these pastors prepare lessons that are scripturally sound and culturally appropriate.

Picture
God is making a way where there was no way
This is our 4th year of distributing Bibles. Here and in Africa, our partners are becoming confident that we are in this for the long haul. We have delivered what we promised ONLY with God’s help and provision.
We look forward to what 2021 will hold.

Uganda Calling!

10/23/2020

…BUT COVID!
Earlier this year, Uganda’s COVID lockdown prohibited us from moving about the country.

This month Uganda is slowly reopening its borders and churches. Thousands of Bibles are arriving now. NOW FINALLY, we are launching in the new region again!

NOVEMBER 6 to NOVEMBER 15!
We pray we can find good partner church associations. We will hold multiple meetings with leaders in each city adhering to appropriate COVID restrictions.

We are also meeting with women in the Hosanna Bible-Based Community Outreach to hear how they are doing and how the ministry is growing.

PASTOR QUOTES - WHO KNOW WE ARE COMING
  • “Our rural church members are discipled and preached to. But unfortunately only one or two people in the church have a Bible. Our people need people Bibles! We've lacked God’s Word for too long.”
  • “In this region, the church masses are without Bibles. They need a Bible so they can share the Good News of Jesus Christ and His love for them.”
  • “Our untrained Church leaders need to understand why the Bible is important to EVERY believer.”
  • “Your videos and photos of people, receiving Bibles and hearing how they change, motivates us to encourage our people to find a way to obtain a Bible.”

YOU CAN HELP
  • Pray for this launch! Not many foreigners have arrived since the lockdown. We don't understand all the rules, but are trusting that God will go before us.
  • This need is urgent for the church in Africa. God is clearly working in this pandemic there.
  • Help us with this work!
    • Fund training for one ministry leader. ($4 gives them 2 meals, a pen, notebook, and 20 page handout).
    • Fund office equipment (the staff are volunteers but do need equipment – printer, laptops, and camcorder.)
    • $10 places a Bible in the hand of one hungry for God’s Word in their mother tongue plus training in how to use it.
Donate to the Disciple Makers Network via credit card or check designating the gift as "Bibles".
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 NIV

July 8, 2020 - If you cannot read this...

7/8/2020

"...give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this.” He says, “I cannot read.” - Isaiah 29:12

IF YOU CANNOT READ THIS...
You are like 24% of Ugandans who need the spoken word because they cannot read.

IF YOUR PASTOR CANNOT READ THIS...
You will attend a church led by a pastor who is semi-illiterate or illiterate. Your pastor has difficulty interpreting the Bible.

IF YOUR CHURCH CANNOT READ THIS....
How your church is led will impact the African church. Preaching what you think is in the Bible is different than preaching what the Bible actually says.

BUT IF YOU CAN HEAR THE WORD...
Our partnership with Talking Bibles offers the non-reader and the blind access to the Bible in their native language.

A Talking Bible can change the life of a non-reader.
